Ubuntu 8.04
My desktop for some reason stopped working. I cannot do the following any longer:::
1) can't right click
2) all the desktop icons/folders are missing.
even though the folders are there in nautilus
So, How do I get it back?
Hi, I have Lenovo T60 laptop with an ATI Radeon Mobility X1400 and Ubuntu Feisty running. The situation is that the display of my laptop has a different "resolution" depending on whether I start X with a monitor attached to my laptop or not. The thing is that without monitors, everything appears really big in my laptop display and I would like to have it always differently.
The reason why I put that this a resolution problem between quotes is that in both cases both the Xorg log and the gnome resolution tool shows that it is running on 1400x1050, but definitely the appearance of the whole desktop manager is really different (like if the resolutions were different).
I have read the xorg.conf man page and Googled for ages. I have tried most of solutions I found and even updated to the newest ATI drivers. I have also tried different combinations on my xorg.conf: with and without clone option, force monitors (equivalent to enablemonitor), add higher resolution modes (but in any case the EDID data says the maximum allowed is 1400x1050 for both my monitors and the laptop display), etc.
Any idea what is going on? Whenever I am not at work and therefore I don't have a monitor, I can don't work so well (e.g., only 2 tasks fit in my taskbar, instead of aroun 7 when I have a monitor attached).
I attach my xorg.conf and the two logs: normal is when no monitor is attached and goodRes when a monitor is attached.
Thank you in advance for your support,
D.
I usually download images to desktop. I am now unable to copy or move images. There are two jpg images on Desktop that I have been trying to move to the directory Pictures
usrname@usrname-desktop:~$
usrname@usrname-desktop:~$ cd Desktop
usrname@usrname-desktop:~/Desktop$
usrname@usrname-desktop:~/Desktop$ ls
[shows nothing]
usrname @usrname-desktop:~/Desktop$ ls -a
. ..
I checked the "folder" Pictures and found a folder named Desktop which contained all of the files and images located on my Desktop.
How do I restore functionality so I can move from Desktop to other files?
I have changed the default language from English to Portuguese, but now I have a problem:
when I use the "Locais > Área de Trabalho" shortcut (equivalent to "Places > Desktop"), I get to an empty folder. If I change "Área de Trabalho" to "Desktop" and press enter, only then I'll have access to my desktop. I've tried rebooting with no success. What can I do?
I'm using openbox, and the GNOME desktop icons are coming up. They cover Conky and don't allow me to use openbox's right-click app menu. How can I fix this?
I used the Openbox session in GDM, and it worked fine until a few minutes ago. I'm not sure if I did something to change anything, but now "Desktop" (according to pypanel) is covering Conky. I don't really mind that near as much as the fact that I can't use the right-click app menu, because when I right-click on the desktop it gives me the lame GNOME right-click menu. What am I doing wrong, and how can I fix this?
While cleaning up after uninstalling Google Desktop, I found a bunch of .desktop files in /usr/share/services/searchproviders/
I say "a bunch" because there are eighty-seven(1) such files for a variety of known and unknown search providers (list attached).
Why are all these .desktop files on my computer?
Can I safely delete them?
I did a clean install of Gutsy and everything seems to proceeding normally, except for this. I typically like my "Home" folder as empty as possible, so I deleted all the folders (including, accidentally the Desktop folder). All the other folders disappeared from the Trash normally, but the Desktop folder is stuck there. I delete it, and it reappears in the Trash bin within 10-20 seconds - Its annoying and creepy at the same time.
I can't seem to find a way to restore it, and the "Cut" and "Delete from Trash" options are grayed out. Like I've said before, if I Empty Trash, it reappears after some time. Also, in my Nautilus, if I click on "Desktop" in the left pane, it takes me to /home/(username)/.Trash/Desktop.
I'm no expert at sudoing and rooting my way around, so any help in getting rid of this ghostly folder will be appreciated!
Problem Solved!
Before we start, I think we should start with my problem in post #8. Read that and check the desktop_is_home_dir entry, log out and log in. Your home directory should have become your desktop, most likely. If not, I can't help. :(
1. First, enter this code into a Terminal:
sudo gedit ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
2. Look for this entry: XDG_DESKTOP_DIR. Make it like this: XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"
3. Now log out and log back in. For me, this caused a Nautilus crash - i.e. the desktop disappeared and the nautilus browser wasn't working. So continue:
4. Open up System>Administration>System Monitor and in Processes, look for Nautilus. Stop it completely. If it does not exist, run Nautilus through Terminal (it should not have any effect, don't sudo it) and then stop it.
5. Run Nautilus via Terminal and it should be working furever.
Now before you go telling me, "THERES A STICKY ABOUT THIS, Blah blah blah....,) I've already read the sticky, I got the Compiz-Check script and ran it.

The strange thing is that it worked about ten minutes ago until I rebooted.
I want to install Ubuntu on my desktop. I currently have Suse 10 installed. I know there is a command I can use in windows to completely remove Linux and the grub installer so I can start fresh. I think it is something like "make dr". Could someone inform me of the exact comands to put in so I can give Ubuntu 7.10 a try?
I just installed Ubuntu 7,04 desktop on my PC this past weekend. While doing that, I had a little trouble getting my Motorola WN825G Wireless PCMCIA card working - but, after a little sleuthing, I got it working. In this process, I had executed "sudo apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter" - it installed some items, but it failed when attempting to retrieve / install other parts (the actual firmware, I think). I found other apt commands to get the firmware and proceeded to install the necessary files to get the card to work.
However, I now get the following error anytime I run apt-get or synaptic for any new package :
E: bcm43xx-fwcutter: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
The details indicate that a "404 Not Found" error is being encountered.
Apparently, the package manager is keeping track of the fact that I had a failed download/install of the bcm43xx-fwcutter, and reattempts this install every time I install any package (as if the bcm43xx-fwcutter is in some sort of "pending" install state). I don't want to uninstall the entire package, since I may be using pieces of it, but I would like to get rid of the spurious error messages. BTW - I don't want to simply use a "backup" of an old version of the package database, either, because I've successfully installed several other packages since the original errored installation attempt (simply ignoring the error each time), so "rolling back" the database file is really not viable.
How can I "clear" this error?
Many thanks,
Michael
Update - this problem is now preventing me from installing some packages (g++, in particular), as they error out on the subprocess for bcm43xx.
EDIT: solved
Solution below
I installed a program I found in the repo's called Blast.
It's a silly little program that will make holes in windows when you press a mouse key over the window.
Problem is:
I was playing with it and I guess I "shot" the desktop two times. When I start Compiz, I can see the holes. I can't seem to be able to get rid of them.
I am using the newest repos from Trevinio for Compiz-Fusion, Ubuntu with Gnome Desktop, on a System76 Serval Performance Type 1 laptop.
I'm sure it is something simple, but if anyone could tell me how to reset this on my desktop, I would be most grateful.
Thanks in advance.

EDIT:
Attached is photo of desktop with two "holes" showing in the middle of the desktop.
EDIT:
I went to my /home folder and found a folder named
.metacity
Knowing that was my window manager, I opened it and in it was a folder named
sessions
and it that was a file containing all of my Metacity sessions.
The last three were a little different than the rest. I deleted the last three, restarted and now the problem no longer exists.
I currently share the WIFI connection thats on my laptop to my desktop by LAN (RJ45). Ubuntu is finding [using] this ok, but I would like to know the following:
Is it possible to share the drives on both my laptop and my desktop? I know this is possible (even under windows XP) but so far havent found an option to do this with Ubuntu. To be honest I will probably just share the NTFS partitions that is on a second hard drive.
The reason why I am asking is my laptop has a load of stuff on it that I need on my desktop. I am going to put Windows XP and Windows 7 on my desktop but if I could also do this through Ubuntu, it would be brilliant.
Also, whilst my profile says I have Ubuntu 8.10, I also have the ISO for Ubuntu 10.04 and Ubuntu on my desktop has been updated to Ubuntu 9.10. Would it be worth me installing 10.04 straight away or would it be better to install 8.10 and then upgrade it? I will more than likely totally wipe my booting hard drive as Im not sure how to recover the GRUB and have updated it to the latest GRUB loader (v 1.99?)
Admittedly my experience of Ubuntu is not that great, but I do have a "knack" for sorting out issues with my monitor (which so far has meant editing the monitors.xml) after installing the required driver.
Hoping I havent made this topic too complicated
I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop on Raid 0

Is there a consolidated list of software repo/packages avl for Ubuntu 8.04 - Desktop, rated or criticized by users?
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/
I'm just overwhelmed by looking at the list on each section in the above link?
Well, you may tell "it depends", but am looking for details such as max downloads, highest rating, must have etc in each section.
For eg, I went into Games, but there are a lot of games, and I didnt know which one was downloaded the max, you know what I mean?
