I created a bootable USB stick with LinuxLive USB creator (LiLi): http://old.linuxliveusb.com/
Used the iso file for Ubuntu "ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64.iso"
I plug the key into USB port of the machine before startup. Press esc key to access the BIOS menu, select boot on USB key.
WARNING:
All USB ports are not equal and the Ubuntu installation process won't start on the right USB ports or the front left ones. You need to plug the key to the far left ones!
Create partition (logical):
Remove the FreeDOS partition
Swamp of 20MB
\ of 24MB
\home with the rest of the HD
Ubuntu installs correctly without any further intervention.
WARNING:
When I restarted the computer it did not boot correctly and was stuck with the following error message:
[ 6.484165] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: Pointer to BIT loadval table invalid
I found the solution on a forum (http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2010/05/06/ubuntu-10-04-lucid-blank-screen-at-startup-workaround/):
Start the computer again (second time) you should access a screen that propose you different version of Linux to start with. Select the first one, but ask to edit it: "e" key.
Add "nomodeset" at the end of the second from last line after "quiet splash". Then press <Ctrl>+<X> to boot
In my case, Ubuntu loads, but with a screen resolution of 800x600 instead of 1600x900. Plus, this solution is not permanent and should be redone each time if not fixed as follow:
Use terminal
Write: "sudo nano /etc/default/grub"
edit the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
into GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset"
Pres <Ctrl>+<X> to save, <y> to confirm, and <Enter> to quit.
Then you need to update grub by entering this command in the terminal:
"sudo update-grub "
Close the terminal
Re-boot
This done, the screen resolution was still 800x600 and I freak out a little bit before I realize the Nvidia driver was not installed. So: go to Système ->administration->additional driver
The system recognize by himself the missing driver and ask for an download. Accept. Restart. Your should be fine (so I am).
I run tests and results are:
Is working:
DVD, SD reader, USB ports, Ethernet ports (both on laptop and docking station), WiFi, sound, shortcut keys at the top of the keyboard (mail, home, calculator).
Is NOT working:
The ambient light sensor is not working at this stage.
The shortcut key for disconnecting the touchpad.
The shortcut to use a projector <fn><f4> (though the projector can be accessed through the monitor interface).
I recently got an HP EliteBook 8540p from work and installed Ubuntu on it. When I plug in my headphone I can hear the music, but it's got a lot of static. I have not yet tried sound through the laptop's speakers (can't start playing music at work, so it'll have to wait until later today if you want me to test that).
Is there someone who can help me fix this? Mind you, this is the first time ever for me to use Ubuntu.
Some stuff I've already tried:

the question sounds so easy and tough is very challanging!
I used... sudo ifconfig wlan0 down
... to get my wireless interface down, this works for a short term, but after a few minutes the interface is up again!
I already uninstalled network-manager so this doesn't influence the situation...
May be I can modify my /etc/network/interfaces to make it work the way I want it to, this it how it lookes like http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/40158/
everyone and thx for all the help you people provide for beginners like me, Appreciated.
My reason for installing ubuntu is simple. My laptop keeps crashing in windows but seems stable with ubuntu.
How ever, im super green when it comes to linux, and thats prolly the main reason I cannot get the wireless adapter to work.
It's as if ubuntu doesn't detect an interface for my wireless adapter.
Anyways, Heres some screenshots that might make sense to some of you.
I've tried mad wifi btw, but it didn't work when I didn't have an interface (ath0 or something like that)

In case this helps anyone, here's how I installed my HP printer.
-
The printer in question is an HP Laserjet 1320tn and is network enabled. For our purposes here let's say it is on my network at IP address 111.222.333.444.
1) I installed HPLIP:
% sudo apt-get install hplip
2) Generated a URI for use later on:
% hp-makeuri 111.222.333.444
-
The ouput of the command for me was:
hp:/net/hp_LaserJet_1320_series?ip=111.222.333.444
3) Next I edited the /etc/cups/cupsd.config file (you can use gedit or vi) so that the cups web interface would not require a username/password to add the printer. I commented out the two lines in <Location /admin> section:
AuthType Basic
AuthClass System
changing them to:
#AuthType Basic
#AuthClass System
4) I then restarted cusp daemon so the changes would take effect:
% sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart
5) Next I brought up the CUSP web intervace by pointing my browser to http://localhost:631/ and then followd the following steps:
- clicked on: Printer -> Add Printer
- typed in a name, location and description for the printer and clicked
'Continue'
- selected AppSocket/HP JetDirect for 'Device' and clicked 'Continue'
- typed in the uri obtained in step 2) above in 'Device URI'
(hp:/net/hp_LaserJet_1320_series?ip=111.222.333.444) and clicked
'Continue'
- Selected HP for printer make and clicked 'Continue'
- Selected my HP printer model and clicked 'Continue'
5) At this point I was finished adding the printer so I undid the changes to the CUSP configuration file and made those changes take effect:
- I edited /etc/cups/cupsd.config, changing the following lines in <Location /admin> section:
#AuthType Basic
#AuthClass System
to
AuthType Basic
AuthClass System
- I ran "sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart" for these changes to take effect
6) Now I can manage the printer by selecting (from gnome desktop)
System -> Preferences -> HPLIP Toolbox
Hope this helps someone!
Recently installed 7.10 on my Asus G1s-A1 laptop and am having difficulty getting wireless to work. After spending a day on this I think the problem is that ubuntu wants to connect using the wireless interface wlan0 but when I run 'lshw' the wireless card has the logical name: wmaster0.
Being new to this, I tried following others advice which was to modify my /etc/network/interfaces file and changed all instances where it said 'wlan0' to 'wmaster0' without luck.
I have posted the relevant sections of lshw, ifconfig and iwconfig below

I have instelled ubuntu-AMD64 on my new hp compaq nx6125 with AMD Turion 64 processor. It works well except for wireless.
I tried with ndiswrapper and windows xp driver for Broadband 802.11 a/g WLAN but it dosen't work. Maybe because windows xp is 32 bit version (and so wlan driver)??
Can anyone help me?
Sorry for my English
I use Ubuntu 11.04 amd64 version.
MY wireless card a broad com chipset following
14e4:4315
things have worked fine until I created a guest OS in Virtualbox. To the guest I used bridged netwroking mode and since I use wireless card the Virtualbox got connected to the wireless interface and created a bridge over there.Upto here things are smooth the guest has access to internet as well and some one from within the lan can do an SSH to the guest OS.
The problem starts now after some time of working the wireless on the host machine disconnects.Rebooted the host OS but the connectivity of host finished.Reinstalled the b43-installer no success.
Renamed the VirtualBox guest OS folder to a different location
i.e.
mv /home/rin/VirtualBox VMs/Windows /home/rin/VirtualBox VMs/KWindows
Rebooted the host machine.
Got wireless back on track.
Again tried to use guest so
mv /home/rin/VirtualBox VMs/KWindows /home/rin/VirtualBox VMs/Windows
switched on the virtual machine in Virtual Box again after some time the connectivity of host is in problem.SO have to disable the networking option for VirtualBox guest machines.
Could this probably be a bug?
My OS: Ubuntu 11.04

A breeze to set up Hardy Heron 8.04 Wireless with HP ZD7000 Broadcom
Copy Windows Drivers from HP Driver Disk to Root Directory WXP2
(make directory first)
Copy BCMl5.sys from Window/System32/Drivers to Root Directory WXP2
Use Synaptic to install ndiswrapper package with dependent files
Use System - Administration to run setup Wireless Network
Add wireless network name and pw
restart
disconnect wired ethernet line
push wireless button on laptop
connect
DO NOT USE FWCUTTER TO MODIFY FIRMWARE!!
I'm new to Ubuntu! My wife gave me an old hp Pavilion n3390 laptop and I thought it would be a wonderful chance to give Ubuntu a spin.
I changed BIOS to boot from disc, the drive is read, the Ubuntu menu appears, I select "Run or install Ubuntu", and after the orange status bar oscillates across the screen several times, the screen goes black and the computer just sits there...staring back at me...laughing at my feeble attempts to break the bonds of Microsoft enslavement.
Has anyone successfully installed Ubuntu 7.10 on an hp Pavilion n3390?
I know there are lots of posts around wireless but this seems to be a slightly different issue so please bear with me.
I've never been able to get the wireless on my Dell D400 with a Broadcom Corporation BCM4309 802.11a/b/g (rev 02) work with older versions of Ubuntu. I installed 9.10 and enabled the B43legacy driver under "Hardware Drivers".
I am able to view all the available wireless networks if I click on the network icon.
HOWEVER - I am unable to actually connect to any of them. If I try to enter in the wireless password (WPA/WPA2) when it asks, the icon just spins and ultimately doesn't connect. I've tried this with both secure and unsecured networks and it won't connect.
I've checked a log and the below is what I'm seeing - in my uneducated view it's having trouble authenticating (yes, the password is correct - I've got another IBM laptop running 9.10 working without any problems).
Any help would be MUCH appreciated - I have never been able to get wireless working on this Dell laptop and I really don't want to go back to MS.

I have a laptop from LG where I'm testing Ubuntu. How do I add a WiFi connection in Ubuntu 7.10 (i'm not able to find any options from network setup)? Haven't yet installed Ubuntu, but running from LiveCD. What should I do to get my network connection working?
