I recently had a problem with sound on my main account. The speaker icon on the upper right shows the speaker with --- after it, and when I would click on it I would have no option to mute/unmute and when I clicked on the slider to increase the volume the menu would simply disappear. I did not have any problems with the audio in a second account I created.Due partly to this I decided to reinstall Ubuntu 11.10, and my audio worked fine, until this morning I mounted my /home to a separate ntfs partition, and now I have the same problem again.I tried running through some of steps in the sticky th
I installed Ubuntu 11.10 alongside Windows Vista on my HP Presario V6317ca laptop. When I try to choose Windows Vista /dev/sda1 from the boot menu (called grub?), it goes back to the menu, but I don't mind that for now, as I can still see the files in Ubuntu. The wireless did work on that before I installed Ubuntu. I went to System Settings -> Additional Drivers and did activated Broadcom STA wireless drivers but yet I cannot detect wireless signals and the light on the laptop is still red.lspci | grep Broadcom\ Corporation03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g W

I'm trying to get a VPN connection working between my Ubuntu laptop and Windows 7 desktop at home. But every single guide and every combination of settings ends up in a "connection failed" message. Here's the situation so far:= On my desktop PC I run Windows 7 Ultimate and I've setup an Incoming connection using the standard setup wizard that Windows provides for setting up a VPN.= In Ubuntu 11.10 I've tried (what I believe) every combination of settings that I could find on the internet to find the one that would work, yet still I can't connect. The only thing that bothers me is that

I'm very new to this,. but from all I've gathered all I know is my sound card isn't detected, and Alsa mixer does not work, at all, and every time I try any command it tells me no such file or directory exists. I'm running a dual-boot machine with Win7 Ultimate 64bit and Ubuntu 11.10 32bit, both kept up-to-date. Now the weird problem is that I don't get any sound at all except in Ubuntu. Everything works fine here, but Win7 is silent since a couple of days. At first I thought it was a Win7 problem, but it isn't. And I don't have a dedicated sound card but am using onboard/internal sound. In the meantime I've installed several others Linux distros (the latest versions of Zenwalk, Vector Linux, and anti-X to be precise) instead of Ubuntu, and I didn't get any sound at all in any of them. Hello, I am quite new to basically everything, and not as knowledgeable as others (considering i'm 17). So my dad gave me his old Gateway M675prr notebook, running Ubuntu 11.10. The only problem was the Wireless firmware was missing, and no audio worked anywhere. Even the headphone jack doesn't play sound. Last night I researched on the forum and found a command line that i just copied and pasted into Terminal, which then downloaded the necessary drivers for the Wifi to work. Is there anything of that sort I can do with my soundcard to perhaps fix this problem? If it helps, my soundcard is a:I
My Ubuntu 11.10/64 installation no longer automounts external USB drives and CDs/DVDs inserted in the drive, be they empty or not. I've noticed the problem today, when I wanted to transfer some files to a friends' computer. I can see external USB drives in Disk Utility so I ended up manually mounting a flash drive and unmounting it from there too (nautilus returned a message that it did not know how to unmount).I'm not sure of the procedure to mount a DVD disk, empty or full so I didn't try that route. As far as I can tell, Ubuntu knows that there's a DVD drive in place and that there's someth

The only problem is that I've no language selector at my login screen...:confused:Where is it supposed to be?

I know that the appearance menu does not come with the new release and that there are some alternatives like Gnome Tweak Tools, but I truly miss the simplicity of the old System->Preferences->Appearance menu that allowed you to change anything within the selected theme. and thanks to all that take the time to read this. I have just downloaded the 64bit distribution of Ubuntu 11.10. I am trying to install alongside windows seven on an HP G72-B66US notebook. I have the ISO image on a thumb drive and am using Netbootin to install. Everything seems to be working fine. I followed the prompts to a dialog box titled "Installation Type". This is where I am confused as to how to procede. I just performed this same action on my wife's Thinkpad and at this point I had a GUI box to drag a divider between windows and linux creating partition space +/- for each.

How do you guys like this idea: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/27614/The idea is about how Ubuntu should have a version of Gnome 3 without the shell (traditional style) available for Ubuntu 11.10 since Canonical won't include Classic Desktop (Gnome 2.30.2) anymore. Linux Mint which is another alternative To Windows and Mac has decided to include a "traditional layout" of Gnome 3 (no Gnome Shell) as their default interface. Of course if users want to they can install Gnome 3 or Unity both of which have received many positive and negative comments.SO check out the link to Ubuntu bra
