  • Running Mint Debian Edition with Stable repositories

OK - I have just installed Mint Debian Edition on my dad's Laptop. I changed the repositories to squeeze (current debian stable) before the first update. I'm using apt-get update && apt-get upgrade to keep things up to date.I wanted a system that is easy to use and administer ... for now I'm going with squeeze as there will be few updates but it will be security patched - so system breakage should be minimal. I think just pointing to stable rather than squeeze will probably result in a few problems when wheezy replaces squeeze as stable. At some point (probably about 18 months time) the

  • Ubuntu Enable root account?

HiI am new to Ubuntu.I have heard so much good press about Ubuntu recently that I decided to give it a try. I downloaded 6.06 (Dapper) last night and installed it on my Thinkpad T40.Installation went without a hitch. This morning I downloaded a .mp3 file to /home but had a problem when I tried to move it over to my (USB) iRiver player. I had a message saying I did have admin status to do it. Normally, I would get around such a problem by going into Terminal and typing 'su'.I did this and it asked me for my password. Here's the rub: when I installed Ubuntu I can only remember typing in one pass

  • Ubuntu Linux Mint Debian Edition

I've just installed and been playing around with linux mint debian edition, and wow am I impressed. It certainly lacks a lot of the polish of ubuntu or vanilla mint but it makes up for it in its performance. I don't know why it performs so much better than pretty much every other distro I've tried, especially ubuntu. For example in ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 the scrolling in firefox with smooth scrolling enabled is horrific and laggy (using catalyst 11.3/11.4 and oss driver.) in LMDE its just as smooth as in windows using both the oss driver and catalyst. Compiz is generally FAR smoother too. Minim

  • Ubuntu Linux Mint Debian Edition theme

  • Ubuntu Linux Mint "Debian" Edition

I am currently a Linux Mint user for one reason; I wanted an OS that "just works" and Ubuntu 10.04 failed me. Linux Mint 9 has no issues that Lucid had, so essentially I'm running a patched version of Ubuntu.I noticed today a new edition of Mint was released called LMDE; Linux Mint Debian Edition, based on the Debian Testing branch but "Mintified" with the same extras that Mint applied to Ubuntu's base. For me, this might be exactly what I need. I want an easy to use, out of the box OS. It's not that I can't tinker/fix stuff, it's that I shouldn't have to spend time doing so

there. I have a Fedora 7 server with 2 drives, one dedicated to Fedora, the other is an NTFS drive which i use for storage (I'd use linux, but I CAN'T lose that data =\ )OK, well, I was setting up Fedora to be an FTP server, and I kept getting permissions errors, annoyed, I just set it so full access could come to the entire drive. Upon doing this, my FTP worked beautifully, and I could modify my entire drive at will from a distance - great. Well.... After something I did required a restart, I came back into root's GUI and found about 20-30 error messages all blathering about my internet not b

As the title says, it seems definitely different than in vanilla (gnome) Ubuntu. I tried kuser but it's kinda hard to understand...for what it seems I enabled the root account but I'm still not able to login to it from the normal login screen...I need a permission for that too (I remember I had to do both things in normal Ubuntu back then).I already changed the password to something I'll remember so I just want to know how to enable login of it from the normal login screen (the same one I use to login to my normal account).

  • Ubuntu Linux Mint Debian Edition...anyone?!

Being a bit annoyed from all the ranting that goes on about Unity the last couple of days I decided to have a friendly chat about Linux Mint's latest development: LMDE!So...anyone tried yet? The Mint team really has rolled out some kind of userfriendly Debian. It's fast, it looks good, it's more complete than any base install can be. There are regressions though, compared to Mint's main line, but that's obvious, isn't it?So, if you like, chime in with your latest LMDE experiences. Maybe somebody who dislikes the way Ubuntu may take will find a new home there?!About me: Exclusively running Linu

  • Ubuntu Linux Mint Debian Edition Questions

Now I know some of these questions will be like duh, but still I just want more of a confirmation for what I'm asking if I'm right or an addendum to what's wrong with my statements.1. My hardware works better under LMDE (specifically I don't have to patch my sound) because the kernel isn't modified, it's pretty much a direct compile from kernel.org with minor changes for it to work under Debian? - This I get the feeling I'm wrong in stating.2. Besides having to reconfigure VirtualBox for kernel updates, are there any other pieces of software that you can think of where I'd have to reconfigure

  • How can I enable root login w/Mandrake Linux 9.2?

If you haven't used Mandrake before they have it set up in a Windows XP like fashion where you click on Icons to login you don't type in a username. Unfortunately they do not allow root to login. You can only get to it by su. I understand it's a good way to keeping somebody from using root to do everything however when you are setting up the system it is annoying using su in every shell I open and everytime I want to do something on the desktop entering a password. In the /etc/passwd file root is set to login to /bin/bash there's no "nologin" that I see. Any suggestions?

I am toying with the idea of moving both my kids computers to use Ubuntu, possible Feisty when it becomes final. One thing about Ubuntu I don't like is sudo.I've read how to change this for Edgy, and am curious if it will work for Feisty when complete? My reasoning, is that I don't need them installing software, changing print settings, and such. Also, I set them up to use a proxy filter to protect their eyes from the nasties of the internet. I want to keep root control over their proxy settings. So, is it possible, and is this How-To for Edgy still valid?
