  • Ubuntu FSCK dies with status 8

I used to run Gutsy on /dev/sda2 (/dev/sda1 is still XP). I then upgraded Gutsy to Hardy via the net ( had made a live CD, though, that proved *very* useful later)Hardy went freezing up more and more until it blocked totally, locking me out from anything but console commands, so I reinstalled Gutsy fresh on a different partition /dev/sdb2.Now I mount the former gutsy boot partition as /home/data,but more and more often, then always, the partition won't automount and I "fall" into the diag console. There I can issue the "mount /dev/sda2" and "exit" commands and all

since I want to update to Hardy Heron with a clean system, I would like to get rid of a problem, which always arises when booting. I have to confess that my hard disk is a little bit unorganised since I had earlier Suse 10.3 and I never got rid of these partitions. I believe that I may have both caused this and solved my problem. I have two drives, both Gutsy. I was trying to move files between the two and in former times, had instructions for doing that. The last line (now commented out) was that instruction. On nano-ing the line with ##, the OS restarted without problem.Of the 2 posts that discuss "fsck died with exit status 8" both have "0" replies. But here I go anyway. This is a brand new motherboard & cpu. Same hard drive, but newly installed Gutsy Desktop (tribe 2). It has been completely updated this morning. When powered u

  • Ubuntu fsck fails status 8, but OK on next boot

I've been messing around with Lucid alpha on a second partition on my desktop computer's main drive, and I also installed a second hard drive that was given to me. I've started getting some fsck errors occasionally when I boot into my main (Hardy) installation. I'll get the message "fsck failed with status 8" (or similar wording) and then a root shell appears. If I continue with the boot, I then get the message that my home directory doesn't exist and the option to log into a different directory. If I then reboot, the next bootup is fine. In one case, it even went into a routine check

  • Ubuntu fsck terminated with status 8

This morning, I booted up my laptop and the boot sequence got stuck at the boot splash screen (plymouth). I did an esc and I saw a failure message, the error I remember in my panic mode is: fsck terminated with status 8I rebooted, got the same message. Rebooted again and this time, to my relief, it worked.1) What happened, should I be concerned? Not sure why it worked after 2 reboots.2) Is there a possibility this could happen again?3) Are there any boot log files I could look at?4) Is there anything I can do to fix this? Or a check of some sort?I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Studio 1535 lap

  • Ubuntu fsck fail died exit status 8 (solved)

Just thought I would post re solving the fsck problem I was having.I have 7.10 installed on hda and decided to install also on hdb. After installing on the slave drive (hdb) I could not boot into Master (hda). After reinstalling 'Grub' on HDA I could not boot into the slave drive. At various times I got the fsck failure and had no success with the live CD or fsck. In the end I noticed a discrepancy in the UUID of the menu list on hda that was different from the menu list on hdb (slave drive). So I decided to change the UUID on the menulist on hda to correspond with the UUID on the slave drive.

  • fsck died with exit status 8 during Ubuntu bootup

When I tried to boot Ubuntu this morning I got the message below. I searched on these forums and I found a thread with a similar issue, but the person with the problem didn't say if the suggested steps resolved his issue. (Suggested steps: either replace UUID with sda name in /etc/fstab, or run something which produces output to verify against the UUID value in fstab, but no explanation of why to pick one or the other)Should I follow the steps suggested in this thread?THANKS!Here's the "tail end" of the messages I received from Ubuntu during bootup:Quote:

  • Ubuntu Boot hangs forced fsck and exit status 4

So I upgrade Jaunty Jackalope and when I try and load the deafult kernel it hangs on a black screen.when I try to boot by selecting a recovery version of the kernel.. ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-11(generic) (recovery mode)It says :/dev/sda1 contains a file system with errors, check forced. It then does a check, dies with exit status 4, and then asks me for my root password for maintenance. I enter it and then it says that the password is invalid. Is this the same root password that I sudo with?? Is this some mysterious new password that was set up separately. I am unable to get past this point a

  • Ubuntu scheduled FSCK hangs on startup 8.10 64bit Serp4

Well after a failed upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1170648) I went back to 8.10. Now I'm having trouble with hangs on startup. Sometimes fixed by just hitting a key once, but sometimes I'll need to hold it down constantly. When the scheduled FSCK comes up, it hangs and will sometimes pick up if I hit a key. However, if I decide to skip the check it could take up to 10mins for the esc to register. If I run the check from a livecd then it doesn't pick up any issues, and it no longer tries to do one on startup. I'd rather not have to use a livecd everytime the

  • Ubuntu fsck exited with status 4 -- unexpected inconsistencies

My system started to act weird (Thunderbird wouldn't let me compose new mail messages), so I backed up and restarted my system. During the bootup, I was greeted with:/dev/hda1 contains a f ile system with errors, check forced./dev/hda1Inodes that were part of a corrupted orphan linked list found./dev/hda1: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY. • Ubuntu fsck scare upgrading to 8.04

Posting this here in the hopes that it might help others who got bitten by this.I just upgraded my workstation in place from gutsy to hardy, and most things went pretty smoothly until the reboot, when I got dumped into a shell with an fsck failure on the partition where I store my nightly backups for all my systems. It turned out that the device where the partition lives had been renamed by Ubuntu. What used to be /dev/hdb was now /dev/sdb. Once I realized what had happened, all I needed to do was edit /etc/fstab and change /dev/hdb4 to /dev/sdb4 and remount the partition.HTH.
