All,I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a Compaq Desktop and the initial install worked great. It found all hardware devices and audio, video, network, CD/DVD and all these devices work great. I created all user accounts, but the next day when I powered up the Compaq I lost the GNOME Top Panel for all users. So, Ubuntu 10.04 no longer provides the Applications, Places, and System drop downs. It doesn't provide the right side items of the Top Panel where the notification and logout, powerdown drop downs reside.Any help would be greatly appreciated.
a totally unimportant question: in Ubuntu 10.04, on the upper panel, if I click on the mail icon/Mail, Evolution pops up. I was wondering if it's possible to use it to open Thunderbird mail instead. If it is, how do you re-set it?
I was curious if there was a way to replace the default Ubuntu icon in gnome-panel to the gnome foot rather than the Ubuntu logo? I searched the forums and there was some information about removing start-here.png and distributor-logo.png from /usr/share/icons/$THEME$ but I tried that with the Human theme (followed by killall gnome-panel) but no luck.Any help?
all, i am running ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop and i have the following problem: Before 3 days after a reboot i realized that up-right of my screen there were 2 battery indicators...I did to the one of these right click-->remove from panel but, as a result, both of the battery indicators were gone, the voice indicator was gone, and the indicator which tells you about the wifi networks available was gone as well....I went to "add to panel" but none of these could be found :( Does anybody know how to restore them? is there any terminal command or something?
Ubuntu 10.04 worked great with no problems until the last updates including Gnome. Then Panel start not to show up after boot, and when any application is minimized it just disappears and I will have to re-open the application.I logged out and in several times and nothing changed.Can someone help please???
In Karmic there is a new interface for volume control and mixer (indeed in debian sid too, maybe from newest gnome :) ) I hate pulse audio, till now I succeed to combined pulse with alsa to work fine toghether on my system. when i print under ubuntu 10.10, the job goes through the print queue as successful but the printer does nothing and /dev/usb/lp0 disappears. however, booting from the 10.10 live cd, printing works fine (and /dev/usb/lp0 does not disappear). my problem seems similar to this post (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1659566) except that i'm running the latest ubuntu and my printer is an hp deskjet 2680.for more details, please see output of lsmod, lsusb, etc (http://saponara.net/printer-diagnostics.txt). how can i fix this?
I have just setup a dual boot with windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04. The windows partitions appear in the places menu. I want to remove them (hide them from Linux completely) - I definitely don't want to be accidentally tampering with windows partitions outside of windows. I commented out the entries in the fstab file but on reboot the entries are back and the partitions are still available in places.. any suggestions?

This is driving me mad... My volume indicator in the top right is hidden underneath the clock, after my upgrade to 11.10. I've tried to reset unity, restart unity, old guides to reset panels (I was desperate*), and NOTHING works. Why did the remove the option to move the icons in the panel as you please... oh why? And the alt+right click doesn't work either. Can anyone tell me how to move icons in the unity panel, or try to reset it to default.. something.. I need help, any help.
Two Questions from a newcomer to the forum1. I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to Ubuntu 9.10, and I liked that in 9.04 my full name was displayed on the right side of the Top Panel. i have ntfs windows xp partitions and they are shown in "places" in ubuntu 8.04. i create their shortcuts on desktop but everytime i boot they disappear (on ubuntu 7.10 there was no such problem)any solution?
If I hit Ctrl + Alt + Tab and select the Edge Panel (Ubuntu control panelbar), and then use the cursors to scroll through the Menus (Applications, Places, System), I cannot get back to the Desktop. I cannot escape the Panel by hitting Ctrl + Alt + Tab again. Esc doesn't work. Alt Tab doesn't work. How do I escape the panel and go back to the desktop? Nothing works, not mouse, typing, nothing.
not sure where this question belongs: i can not activate a program that has a open dialog (such as file open dialog) by clicking on the program "button" in the taskbar.i'm using openbox and xfce4-panel, ubuntu 910. i've tried it in gnome and it works - the application's main window and the open dialog are activated (shown).i would not mind this behavior if the same would not apply to audacious - apparently audacious shows several windows (winamp-like interface - main controls, play list window, equalizer window) and it cannot be activated per mouse.
The following icons do not show up in my Gnome (2.32) panel, Ubuntu 10.10:- Power management- Wifi- Keyboard layout- BluetoothMy network connection is also not working until I run nm-applet manually (then the wifi icon shows up too).I tried already adding the notification area to the panel, but this does not help.Under Startup Applications, amongst other the following applications are enabled: bluetooth-applet, nm-applet --sm-disable and gnome-power-manager. I've got some really great looking 128px icons that I'd like to use for launchers on the panel,But it seems no matter what size I make the panel, the icons still stay at 48px maximum.Any way to get them to a higher resolution?psMy goal is to have a nice looking launcher bar at the bottom of the screen with large pretty icons - without using a third party program like gdesklets, which I'm currently using instead of the built in gnome panel,Ubuntu 7.04
I've been trying to change the top panel ubuntu icon ( the one of the main menu & menu Bar). i tried replancing the distributor-logo.png in/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/distributor-logo.pngand nothing happend :confused:what i am trying to do is replace that icon with an apple icon but so far i haven't been able to it.Some how it keeps showing me the ubuntu icon although it doesn't have a file to load from.could it be that the icon is been loaded from another location?is there any other way to do this?HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!
Chaps, This is probably quite a simple one. I'm running Ubuntu (9.10 Karmic), and have a number of things on the top and bottom panels. I've just installed Cairo-Dock, and am quite liking it. In fact, I am very much liking it ... I am thinking of getting rid of the top and bottom panels on the screen, and going over to just using Cairo-Dock. (Does anyone have any general comments on this BTW? Good idea or a really, really bad one?) If I was to get rid if the top and bottom panels, and later decide that I want to get them back, is there a command that rebuilds them? As in, rebuilds them to the
ok guys i will file a bug report if somone helps me fix this first...ok what i did....if you have a fresh install of ubuntu how there is a panel on top and on bottom....well what i did was i moved the top one to the bottom...so there were two at the bottom...so i right clicked went to properties and then clicked auto hide on the upper panel.....ubuntu froze and i had to restart...now all i can see is one panel with nothing on it ...and i really do not know how to get around in terminal ...but it wont let me right click on the panel or anything to change setting add or remove etc....anyone done
In short, I don't have bluetooth in my laptop, and due to hardware limitations I felt like stripping the base system down as much as possible - so as a start I decided to remove all the bluetooth utilities that are automatically installed (fine), and then enabled (not fine).But as it turns out: If I remove the 'libbluetooth2' package not only will all my bluetooth utilities disappear, but ubuntu-desktop will also disappear! OK so its been happening for a while. It seems like it usually occurs when I am on firefox. All of a sudden firefox will freeze and become unresponsive. When I try relaunching firefox, it will not open. Then I will try opening any other app like the calculator and get this messgage:"Failed to execute child process'gcalctool' (input/output error)"I get the same sort of messages with most other apps I try to open. Some applications will open with just a window box and nothing inside of it. I cannot view pictures I have saved either. When I try to restart the computer from the drop-down

Is there a way to make bottom-right window resize handles disappear in Ubuntu 11.04? I run a tiling window manager and thus have no use for them, especially since they can distract and cover information. How do I make them permanently go away? Any help will be greatly appreciated :)
Ok so i was just at my daughter's softball practice and i was doing my homework in the car on my laptop. Openbox and pypanel and all transparencies set by xcompmgr were functioning as expected. Now that i'm home and fired my laptop back up, no more true transparency, only false! so i attempt to run xcompmgr from the terminal and i get nothing. i try my tab completion (maybe i'm spelling it wrong) and nothing. so i "sudo apt-get install xcompmgr" and it installs as if it had never been on my system! Now, in addition to this wierdness, my pypanel now looks like crap. the background beh
Ubuntu 10.10I regret to see the lack of facility for Guided install into the 'largest unpartitioned space on the drive'. I cannot find it either in the Desktop CD, or the Alternate CD. It seemed to disappear in Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop CD but did stay in the Alternate CD. But in 10.10 it seems to have gone completely.I found it a really *very* useful facility for myself, and also when helping others - when all I had to say to them was - 'delete the existing partition/s, do nothing more expect then, install using the facility 'Install into the largest unpartitioned space on the drive'.I know expert
So I removed evolution last night and now I have several issues becuae it took gnome-applets, gnome-panel, ubuntu desktop, fast user switching alacarte, ekiga and libdataserverui1.2-8 with it. I reinstalled the gnome stuff and tried to reinstall ubuntu-desktop but it decided to change that to Ubuntu-studio.so today I took my laptop to a meeting and it would not boot. I had to go to the recovery mode then choose boot normally. guys, Im new here and newbie Ubuntu userI got a Soundblaster 5.1 Live soundcard with frontal panel (a very old card) but works perfect on windows xpMy problem its that, i cant get mic2 works (from the frontal panel). OK I don't boot into Ubuntu every day. So when I booted it today, I found over an hour of updates to download and it took two reboots to do that. OK. I know this is not Windows, but XP updated more easilt and Vista does it invisbily. But I will accept that this is OSS so I move on and notice that two of my partitions are no longer showing on my desktop which is strange especially as I wanted to use GParted to do something.Anyway, I tried to find out how to get them back. I have read a LOT since I first installed this beastie and found that there is a LOT of misleading information on the forums
Aloha Nui! In moving panels I have found that if you move a panel and then fill the panel with icons, it might be a little difficult to grab the panel and move it anywhere else. Not to worry, just remove some of your icons to the point of being able to grab the panel and move it, and then you can add the removed icons back to your panel.....Ubuntu Rocks!!!!:cool: later,surfer57
I've been going back and forth with this over the past few months. I suppose I was hoping an update would fix it. Hey, it costs nothing to dream! ;)Nonetheless, whenever I enable Desktop Effects, all works fine until I go to switch users. If I use the User Switcher on the panel (Ubuntu's default install's location for it) I get a white/blank screen. Luckily I've figured out that it's the password promt so I just start typing the password and hope for the best. I get the white/blank screen when I use the User Switcher on the panel or if I log off completely. I think I've narrowed it down to it

Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 7.04 Dekstop i386 on a dual -boot machine with XP . I can't connect to Internet through my ethernet card. Going to Network panel Ubuntu recognizes my modem but not my Ethernet card. I've always thought of the Desktop as a great way to get easy access to whatever I'm working on, and to visually organize those files so I can tell which files are related. I tend to get distracted pretty easily when I have too many things to look at, and that includes my Desktop. I was having a problem with panels that whenever i added some launchers like firefox, thunderbird, amarok etc, they seemed to disappear every time i rebooted. I googled, searched ubuntu forums and found that many people were having the same problem. Now when i have solved it, i thought of sharing it with other Ubuntu users.The problem was that i was firstly adding a launcher to desktop, then dragging it to the panel and then deleting the launcher from desktop (i believe most of you people also doing this).
