So I've been using Ubuntu for two years now and love it. I just acquired a ten year old desktop and wanted to use it as a file sharing server. My goal is to just use it to hold movies, music and other useless crap but I want to be able to download that stuff from it. I've read through the Ubuntu Server guide but once I reach the routing table stuff it goes over my head. I'm just trying to gauge the difficulty of the endeavor. So any input or helpful link feel free to post.
Forgive me.. :) I'm a Microsoft Server guy!! However I have a Ubuntu Server 10.04 installation running about 2TB of storage on a SATA RAID 5 drive set. Its in a custom built tower server. My Ubuntu consultant indicates that we have to conduct a complete rebuild of the server because we cannot swap drives, have them rebuild, and then expand the storage. I have attempted to down load the Ubuntu server 11.04 several times on different machines and from different sites. Each time I have tried to install it on a separate machine it shows the .deb file as corrupt. When I attempted to install the server at first, it would only let me install apps manually. Otherwise it hung on install. Additionally, I have been trying to get a desktop to install. I get the error message that the Libre-office core will not install when attempting to install updates or get a desk top install procedure started. I have a simple home server used for file backup and printing duties that runs on Windows Home Server. I've installed Ubuntu server 10.04 and then installed Gnome desktop on top of it, because I am new to Linux and its command line, I need the GUI desktop to help me get around. I am installing Ubuntu Server. I have CentOS on my Hard drive now but I want to wipe that clean and install Ubuntu Server over it. Which option should I choose in order to do that? I was thinking about manually deleting each of the spaces but it seems to be taking very long. Not sure if this is the best route.
I've got ubuntu 10.10 loaded on my actual PC, and I'm still pretty new with it. On the same PC I'm running virtualbox that's running ubuntu server 10.04. I'm just messing around with it, finding out that its pretty cool, and easy to use. But anyhow, I set the virtual server up as a simple samba file server, and my Windows Vista PC sees the server just fine, and can save files to it, and I can ping the server using its name. I have installed Ubuntu server 10.10 and I have everything up and running but I am noticing a transfer size limitation (22gb) when I drag my files onto my network drive.I have mapped the share folder as a network drive and it always shows 22.0 GB free of 26.3 GB. It is a 3 TB drive.Anyone have any ideas on how to increase the transfer size limit?Oh my machine that I am transferring form is Windows 7 Ultimate if it is a windows problem.

So ive recently tried out Ubuntu Server 10.10, install went well except for configuring with DHCP, for some unknown reason, so i chose configure later.So now I have no idea on how to configure wireless devices via the command line.The ifconfig command produces the following device:loIt does not yield any eth0 or wlan0 so im stumped.Any help would be greatly appreciated with no flamers or trolls if possible.
I have installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 on a usb drive on one of my old laptops. I used USB for installation since my internal HDD had some issues. My concern (which i noticed later) is that the USB which I used for Server generally shows /dev/sdb1 but if i use the other pendrives (on different usb ports) the server hangs and the "server usb" name changes to /dev/sdc1 after hard restart while the new pendrive gets the name /dev/sdb1. I want to fix the disk label for the "server usb".

I am making a database for tracking loads, expenses, and customers. I want it to be stored on a server and accessible from laptop that he takes on the road and he desktop for when he is home. im new to the ubuntu server....today got new IBM server to setup...so i already created the RAID using the megaRAID setting...after that i want to setup the ubuntu server but stuck at the disk detaction....there are bunch list of the driver there but i dont know which one it is....i already tried use the megaraid driver...still no use...it is like it not detected the driver for the drive.....i really need help....
Just thought I'd have a play with ubuntu server.The problem is that the left hand half of the screen is off the side of the screen.The monitor is at full horizontal adjustment.This happens with this monitor whenever its running in 800x600 resolution.Runing in 1024x786 is fine.Is there a way I can forece the install to run in 1024x786 resolution. My problem is that my ubuntu server 10.10 falls to sleep after a while... That means all the software (apache, transmission,...) can't by accessed by a webbased interface..Than when i press a key, it all works again..Anyone have a solution for this? its quiet annoying...
I have downloaded and installed ubuntu server (64 bit) ver 10.10 and installed it on my VMWare virtual machine. I also have GNOME 2.32.0 version installed. When I select from the menu Applications-->Programming-->Root, I am seeing the following error message:Could not launch 'ROOT'Failed to execute child process'xterm' (No such file or directory)BTW, I am quite new to Linux and wants to access the command line window.
